Placebo Effects; Here Is All You Should Know!

Read Time:3 Minute, 7 Second

The placebo effects are anything that seems to be somewhat “real” medical treatment thought isn’t. It could either be an injection, pill, or any other form of “fake” treatment. But one thing that all placebo have in common is that they lack an active ingredient that is meant to affect health.

How Are They Used?

Placebos have over the years been widely used by researchers during their studies to help them establish the effects of a new drug.

For instance, a study test can be performed where several people are given a new drug to lower cholesterol levels, while others are given a placebo. None of them will be able to establish that he or she has been given the real drug or the placebo during the test.

After some time, the researchers will evaluate the results on their samples (people are given the actual drug and placebo) in the study test. That way, researchers can be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the new drug and also its side effects on the user.

Placebo Effects, What Is It?

There are times when a person can either express some positive or negative responses to a particular placebo. For instance, upon taking a placebo or getting an injection, a person’s symptoms may improve.

For others, they might develop what appears to be some side effects from a given treatment. All these responses are what is termed as “ the placebo effects”

There are certain health conditions in which a placebo will elicit some results even when some people know they are just taking placebo rather than the actual drug or treatments. Studies have shown that placebos can have certain effects on some conditions like; Sleep disorders, menopause, pain, and Irritable bowel syndrome.

In a certain test study that involved asthma, some individuals used a placebo inhaler, but they never expressed any positive signs than those who never used any.

How Do Placebo Effects Work?

Research on placebo effects has majorly focused on the relationship between the mind and the body. For instance, there is this general theory that suggests that the placebo effect is mostly due to the user’s expectations.

That is when a patient takes a placebo without an idea that it’s not an actual drug. He will still have that expectation that the pill will bring about positive changes in his body. This shows there is a certain interaction within the body that can bring about natural healing.

There is also this test study where a group of people were given a placebo and were told that it was an active stimulant. After taking the pills, various body changes were detected, i.e. their pulse rates sped up, body reaction speeds improved, and blood pressure also increased.

But when they were then given the same pills and were told that it was a sleeping pill. They explained to have experienced very different effects opposite to the earlier ones.

When taking a placebo, the person’s expectations also have a greater effect on the response to be expected. A person taking a placebo with a mentality that it will bring about strong responses, that is what is likely to be observed at the end of the test. This will also be the very same case with a person who has little expectation with the placebo effects on his or her body.

This is the very same case that you will tend to find negative effects. If a person expects to observe certain side effects like drowsiness, nausea or headache upon taking a given placebo. There are high chances that responses will be observed.
